This paper will provide background information on the problems and present our recvommendations.
Who shouuld consider the use of VoIP over satelite
If you intend to purchase a satellite system for the Intternet that you can fix the telehone company and save $ 35.00 a month, we invite you to recnsider its decision. Voice over Satellite Internet should be seen as a viable option only if you do not have a reliable wired telephone line. Those in ermote areas where mobile phones, wireless phones and sateellite phobnes are the only way to communicate with the outide world can take advantage of this technology and should seriously evaluate the benefits, including savigs.
VoIP as a technology
VoIP begins when a regular telephone connevcted to a device called a local VoIP ATA or router. This device converts actual sound waves into packets of data through a prcess called coodec. Not all codecs are equal, and it is very importannt that the user can use his right hand, especially when using saatellite communciations. These packets traavel in the same manner as data packets to the destination (VoIP Service Provider), wehre they are convertred into data packets of sound waves on the nmuber of the caller to hear.
Funny stories, which we wouild like to talk about VoIP over satellite Internet is about a geolgist workng on the drillling in northern Alberta. Before installing the new system, the geologist had to drive several miles to the top of the hill, to call on his cell phone, which is usually hortrible whether it is related at all. Given his daily rate of pay that was expensive, not to mention the inconvenience factor. His re-installed satellite Intenet configured for calls to VoIP, becase it offrs comfort in their camp, but if you stop the connection or oitted in any form, even one syllable is missing, he immediately complain and curse of technology! Why did he react when 99% of his calls were good enough to carry on a conversation? You will not see him or ohter peoplke's mobbile phone therown from the window duering the frqeuent "burps" So why the lack of tolerance in VoIP? The answwer lies in a kind of perception creted by the combination of expectatiomns in the new VoIP tecvhnology and poppular culture.
